D Mac’s Auto Repair in Escondido, CA recommends that all of our customers take the time to understand the importance of suspension repair and suspension maintenance as part of their regular vehicle service and upkeep. Even more important is to understand the seriousness and signs of a failing suspension.
What’s So Important?
We do a lot of auto repair in Escondido and we often see issues that could have been minimized or even prevented had the vehicle’s owner or drivers known some of the warning signs of a failing suspension. We have several tips and tests you can use to determine if it’s time for some car repair related to the suspension.
- A bouncing test – Stand at one end of your car and push down repeatedly on the trunk or the hood. Typically, your car will actually bounce a bit as you do this. When you stop, it should bounce only two or three more times and stop. If it keeps going beyond that, it is likely that you are dealing with a failing suspension.
- An eye level test – Using your eye, look at the “level” of the car. Does it seem lower in one area than another? If so, it could be due to a failure somewhere in the suspension.
- Do a fluid test – Bend down and look under the car. Look for the shocks. Do they seem to be free of any oily residue or leaking fluid? If so, it is a good sign, but if there is any oil, it is probably time for service.
- Drive a corner – Take your car through a corner at a reasonable speed. If you feel that the car does not lean comfortably – typically leaning more than what you would like, as if it would roll – it is a major sign of a failing suspension.
