Even though people might understand how important their brakes are for the safety of their vehicle, they do not always understand the importance of brake fluid changes to help preserve their brakes. It is critical if you hope to keep your brakes in good working condition. In fact, many of the vehicles that are on the road today that are more than 10 years old have never had their brake fluid changed. This needs to change, and it should always be a part of your brake maintenance. Let’s learn more about why you need the fluid changed and how often it should happen.

You use the brakes in your vehicle every time you are driving. When you press on the brakes, the brake fluid pushes through the system to activate the calipers with the brake pads on them, which squeeze the brake rotors and cause the vehicle to stop. When you do not have enough brake fluid, or when it is no longer viable, it will make stopping far more difficult and it will cause your brake system to wear out quickly.

The brake fluid heats up as it passes through the system, and over time, with the loss of fluid and the potential added moisture from the environment, it reduces the boiling point.  If the brake fluid starts to boil, it will not allow the brakes to work properly, which will potentially result in a failure that could be very dangerous.

In most cases, you will want to have the brake fluid changed in your vehicle at least once every 20,000 to 30,000 miles. However, many mechanics will want you to have the brake fluid changed about once per year to be safe.
