Have you ever walked out to get in your car in the morning or after work and found that there is a puddle beneath your vehicle? When you notice that something is leaking from your vehicle, you will naturally get a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach thinking that it could be a sign of something bad. Of course, you need to know what type of fluid leak you have to see whether it is a problem and to know how to fix it.
Learning the Colors of Vehicle Fluids
Some of the fluids in your vehicle have different colors that can help to make it quite a bit easier for you to narrow down the culprit. The following are some of the different attributes of vehicle fluids that should help you.
If you were running the air conditioning in the car recently, and the fluid looks like water, there is a good chance that it is just condensation. This will drip through a rubber tube and it will run out onto the pavement below. Fortunately, this is normal and it will not be a problem.
If you notice orange, pink, or green, then it could be a sign of your antifreeze leaking. Keep in mind that antifreeze today comes in a range of colors. You can always sniff the liquid. If it has a sweet smell to it, there is a good chance that you are leaking antifreeze.
If the liquid from your leaking car is pale yellow or pale orange, then you could be leaking gas. Again, the scent is unmistakable, so it should be easy to determine if you have a gas leak. Motor oil tends to be the color of honey, and it is slick to the touch. Transmission fluid may feel the same, but it is magenta in color. Power steering fluid is clear, and it is slippery, whereas brake fluid will have a yellow color.
