Car maintenance myths are common concerns of our Escondido customers which is why we want to debunk them so they don’t spend unnecessary money on auto maintenance they don’t need. Find out the truth behind the top 5 car maintenance myths and then schedule your next auto service with us at D Mac’s Auto Repair.

Car Maintenance Myth: You Should Flush Your Transmission Fluid

Some mechanics recommend transmission services and flushes as frequently as 50,000 miles but this is not necessary. Most modern vehicles have a long-life transmission that is designed to last for at least 100,000 miles or even the life of the vehicle. It depends on your vehicle how often you need to perform transmission maintenance. You can find this information in your owner’s manual.

Car Maintenance Myth: Using Your Air Conditioner instead of Rolling Down the Windows is Better for Fuel Economy

Fuel economy varies per vehicle but most believe that that rolling the windows down causes drag which then decreases fuel economy. This has been tested and no studies found that rolling the windows down decreases any fuel economy. On the other hand, using your air conditioner may reduce your fuel economy by 1 to 4 miles per gallon.

Car Maintenance Myth: Premium Fuel is Better for Your Engine

This is also a well-known myth. Premium fuel is not better for your engine. You should always refer to your owner’s manual to find out what type of fuel is best for your engine. Unless your car requires premium fuel, you are just throwing money away buying it.

Car Maintenance Myth: It’s Better to Drive a Dirty Car to Improve Fuel Economy

Some drivers think that the dirty particles on their car’s surface will reduce wind resistance and therefore improve fuel economy. This may be true for the dimples on golf balls, but the opposite is true for cars. The dirt on your car can actually decrease your fuel economy by up to 10 percent. It’s recommended to keep your car clean for best fuel economy.

Car Maintenance Myth: You Should Fill Up Your Tank First Thing in the Morning

This is once again a car maintenance myth. In order to get the best fuel economy possible, it doesn’t matter what time of day you fuel up, it all works the same. The fuel is stored underground which is insulated from drastic temperature changes. This means the fuel temperature is the same all day, giving you the same amount of fuel each time.
