Signs You Need Auto Maintenance"signs

So, your car isn’t working properly? It’s squealing, sluggish, vibrating, or unreliable. What are you going to do? Sounds like you need a tune-up.

Here’s the thing – in days gone by, vehicles usually required a tune-up at least every 20,000 miles. Today, it can be up to 100,000 miles. You still have to watch for the signs, though. You could need auto maintenance very early into a road trip, so watch for these telltale indicators.

Lights

You know those little lights on your dashboard that seem to light up for no reason? There actually IS a reason, and you need to pay attention to them, and get them diagnosed. It might mean something as simple as a burned out tail light, or it could be something far more significant.

Starting Hard

If your car is a bit sluggish on a cold morning, that could be normal. But if you turn and turn and turn the key and nothing happens, then you have a problem. It could be a bad starter, a drained battery, or any of a number of other problems.

Poor Mileage

Does it seem as though you’re constantly filling up the tank and getting nowhere? A serious reduction in fuel mileage means that your car is not operating efficiently. You should get this checked out – you could have a leaky gas tank, or a more serious issue.

Bad Brakes

Your brakes should always take you to a soft, safe stop. You should never have to press hard on the brake pedal. Brakes shouldn’t feel spongy.

Brake problems should always be checked out.

Loss of Power

We’re not saying that you should speed, but if you have a need for power and you can’t get it, that’s a problem. You need to get to a mechanic to determine the cause.

Troubleshooting

When you experience trouble with your vehicle, your first source of information is your owner’s manual. If you can’t get the answers you need there, then you should immediately head off to a qualified mechanic who can help you to diagnose the problems and come up with a solution. Most of the time, your owner’s manual will guide you in the right direction. If it doesn’t, then you need the services of a qualified mechanic.
