Signs I Need an Oil Change"signs

You know that motor oil doesn’t last forever, but how often should you change your oil, and what are the signs you need an oil change? As a general rule of thumb, you should change your oil according to the time frame suggested by the vehicle manufacturer, which can be as frequently as every 3,000 miles, or as infrequently as every 7,000 miles. It’s easy to forget to change your oil, though. The following conditions will tip you off that you need an oil change.

Oil Light Comes On

If the oil light in your vehicle comes on, this might be a sign of a problem that has to be dealt with immediately. It could be as catastrophic as having lost all of your oil, or it could simply mean that it is time for an oil change. Your oil pressure could also be low for another reason. At D Mac’s Auto Repair, we can diagnose the reason that your oil light is on and take care of the issue for you.

Dirty Oil

If you can’t remember when you last had an oil change, check your oil. Clean oil should be a translucent amber color. Dirty oil will be darker, and if you haven’t had an oil change for a very long time, it might even be black. You need to get an oil change as soon as possible, because dirty oil is going to cause excessive wear on your engine components, and could lead to costly repairs later on.

Listen to the Engine

Low oil pressure due to lack of an oil change can cause rapping or knocking in your engine. This could be an indication that the engine rods are contacting one another, which is not something you want to happen as it can lead to costly repairs. You might also hear a clapping sound, which is a sign that the upper valve train is malfunctioning. Any of these problems can ultimately lead to engine failure, so be sure to get an oil change regularly.
