Is Brake Service Important?
You know, we really shouldn’t even have to answer that question. Why is brake service important? Well, because if you don’t have brakes, you can’t stop!
Think about this – you drive for miles and miles, and how many times do you hit your brakes? That’s right – you can’t even remember, can you? All you know, and all you really need to know, is that when you need your brakes, they’re there for you.
Now, what if they’re not? Think about the consequences, and you’ll know why regular brake service is so important.
The good news is that if they’re properly maintained, brakes aren’t all that prone to problems. And vehicle manufacturers have built in safety systems, so that if you lose your front brakes, your back brakes will probably continue to work, giving you at least some stopping power. And vice versa.
Now, having said that, we have to point out that when you’re having your car checked out, a lot of the time brake service is neglected. It might not even be noticed until you perceive a grinding sound when you press your foot on the pedal, or you feel sponginess when you have to do a sudden stop. These are alerts that tell you that you need brake service right away – not only does it mean that you might not have the stopping power you should have when you need it, it also means that you could be in for really pricey repairs down the road.
Now, if you’re not convinced that you should get brake service immediately, let’s point out one other thing – studies have shown that accidents involving poorly maintained brakes are every bit as avoidable as accidents due to impaired driving, and every bit as deadly. Do you really want to be responsible for a horrible accident that you could have prevented with proper brake service? Of course you don’t.
