One of the coolest innovations in modern auto repair is computerized car diagnostics. There are many onboard devices as well as those used in the shop, and they require computers that speak to one another and let us know what’s going on with your vehicle. They are linked to major systems, and at D Mac’s Auto Repair in Escondido, CA one of the more common calls we get about these diagnostics relates to the ABS light.

Part of many modern vehicle’s array of gear, the ABS or Antilock Brake System is a fantastic bit of safety technology. What it does is override a car’s natural behaviors and sends more fluid to the wheels if the car heads into a slide. It works so fast that you rarely even notice the slide before the ABS kicks in. Clearly, it is not something you want to see malfunction. However, the light does come on for a variety of reasons, including:

Module Problems

Most modern products have computers and most computers need modules. The ABS features a module, which is really just its control center. If that module suffers any sort of damage or wear and tear, the ABS light kicks on to let you know it is not going to work properly.

Sensor Problems

Modules get data from sensors, and unfortunately, there are issues that can cause sensors to malfunction. If there is no data coming from a sensor, or odd data is coming in, the light will kick on.

Fluid Issues

As part of your regular auto maintenance in Escondido, we drain and replenish various fluids, including brake fluids. If air gets in or there is not enough fluid in the system, it will cause the ABS light to indicate.

Hydraulic Pump and/or Valve Issues

Of course, that fluid is going to be pumped through the system, and it is done using hydraulics. If the gear within that hydraulic system is not able to function, or if it fails to respond to the wheel speed sensor data, the ABS light is going to illuminate.
